Common Monitors Issues
- Lines on the Monitor – If noticed that there are either horizontal or vertical lines on your monitor, try to see first if it’s software-related or hardware related. If the lines are present even before loading Windows, the problem lies in the hardware. You may test either your monitor or your video card for functionality problems.
- Colors on the Monitor – Sometimes odd colors appear on the monitor screen. Try to see if there are any magnetic devices near the monitor such as speakers, mobile phones, etc., since they often cause these problems. If those devices are not present, proceed to troubleshooting in the same manner as when you have lines on the monitor.
- Flickering Video – Perform troubleshooting and treat the monitor as if it has lines on the screen.
- Abnormal noise – if your monitor produces intolerable levels of noise, consider replacement. Unlike computer parts, monitors are purchased as a whole and its components cannot be purchased separately.
Monitors are one of the easiest computer devices to troubleshoot since you only have to deal with a few components. However, it also involves the most expensive of hardware such as the monitor, video card, and motherbaord. So, make sure that you have accurately identified the source of the problem before considering hardware replacement.
- Determine if there is a driver issue
Most monitor drivers are already included in the operating system package and no longer need to be installed. The driver is called the generic PnP monitor driver, and often no longer needs user modification. The illustration below shows the Pnp driver as it appears on the Device Manager:
However, for some operating systems and monitors, a driver may need to be separately installed. This issue is particularly present in computers that uses legacy operating systems and monitors that do not use the generic PnP monitor driver. Consult your monitor or operating system vendor’s documentation for more information regarding the driver your monitor should use.
To reinstall the driver, first the current driver would need to be uninstalled. Go to the Device Manager by clicking on Start and giving a right-click on the My Computer icon. Select Manage on the list provided. The Computer Management window would appear next. Click on the option that says Device Manager. Go to Monitors, and right-click on the item below it. Click uninstall and follow the rest of the installation procedure.
To install the driver, you may either get the installation files from the CD that came with the monitor, from the manufacturer’s website, or by running our automated driver updater. To install it from the CD, simply put the disc into the CDROM drive, look for the executable file and run the application. If you’re going to use the installation files from your manufacturer’s website, you would need to download them first, and extract them (if compressed). Look for the setup applicatioon and run to initialize the installation process.
For monitors using the generic PnP monitor driver, driver issue is rarely a problem. But if you think you would need to reinstall the monitor driver, just uninstall the PnP driver in the Device Manager, and restart the computer. Your operating system would automatically detect the missing driver for the monitor, and would quickly install it before loading the entire operating system.

- Check the Power Status of Your Monitor and Computer
Determine if your monitor is receiving enough power in order to operate normally. Check the power supply being used, and if possible, connect the power cable directly to the wall outlet. Sometimes a faulty power supply may cause problems for your monitor.
It is also advisable to see if your computer is also receiving enough power. If you’re computer is not ON, it would definitely not display any image on the screen.
- Check the Cabling
Do you have a long cable? There is a limit on how long a cable should be for each monitor. Make sure tha you are using the cable prescribed for your monitor. If not, use a shorter cable.
Do you see any damage on the monitor cable you are currently using? If you suspect that the cable is the source of your monitor problem, try to test your monitor with another cable in good condition. If the issue is absent after replacement, you have a cabling problem and the cable would need to be replaced.
- Test with Another Monitor
If the cabling seems fine, the next thing to check is the monitor itself. Try to swap monitors with another computer. If the issue is still present, the chances are your monitor is working fine and the problem lies inside your computer case.
If the issue is no longer present after swapping the monitors, then consider buying a new monitor for your computer.
- Test the Video Card
There are some computer utilities that can peform various tests on your hardware. These tests can even run without even loading your operating system. Some computer manufacturers (Dell, HP, etc.) have these tests already installed in their computer systems. But for those who have custom-built computers, consider looking for a related software.
If for some reason you’re unable to find a hardware testing application, you may remove the video card in your computer case and see if the problem remains the same. This will force the computer to use the chipset video components on your motherboard. If the issue is still the same, you may have a motherboard issue. Otherwise, you may just need a replacement of the video card.
